My Students
My students come from a small, rural community. Our district is a Title I School with sixty-two percent of the population qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch. We are also seeing a growing population of ELL (English Language Learner) students from the Congo. Second grade is such an exciting group of mixed interests, abilities, and goals. Some of my students are learning to read, write, and count, while others are learning to explore, use critical thinking skills, and conduct experiments.
My goal is to give every student an equal chance to learn as much as they possibly can.
Our school population is changing. We are encountering more students who are coming to us with little or no support at home.
As my students make gains in my classroom, they begin to find pride in themselves. My classroom is about building skills. The work we do in this classroom is building relationships, staying with the group, following directions, and accessing general education content in different ways. We celebrate little wins together each day. My students walk into class every day full of life, ready to learn, and excited for what is in store for them. I want them to love coming.
My Project
Reading workshop is my students' favorite time of day. They get to pick an adventure, curl up and get lost in a different world, learn about life around them and go to places that they can only imagine. About two years ago, our district adopted and implemented the Units of Study in Reading. Components of the workshop involve independent reading, shared reading and read aloud. Teachers are constantly asked to be creative and find or use our own money to purchase books that go along with what we are teaching.
These books I have selected promote the joy of reading, develop children’s vocabulary, and increase their ability to think, talk, and write about texts that fully engage their interest.
They also provide this small rural community of readers a look outside their lives and into the lives of people around the world.
Each of these books are high-quality, picture books with engaging illustrations that represent a variety of authors and illustrators, topics, themes, and text structures.
