My students are interested in the world around them. They are city kids with a keen interest in learning new things. They love to explore, to write, to build and to read. As the ELD teacher for kinder and 1st grade, I spend my time pushing
into classrooms to teach English language learners.
My students come from an impoverished background, but they also have strong family ties and parents who want the best for them. Our school is very large and with the latest state budget cuts, our class will be much larger than normal. This won't stop us from becoming a school family looking out for each other and learning everything we can in these first pivotal years of school.
My Project
These books, puppets and other materials encourage joy in the great big world around us. These concepts are especially important in a big city school where students don’t all look the same. This effort toward compassion and kindness as well as honoring heritage and personal choices is all about opening minds. Students can come to school without the tools they need to get along with others. A classroom is about building the community. These tools will be a way to invoke a spirit of inclusion in classrooms at our school. These items are much needed to introduce big concepts in a fun way.
