Diversity and Tolerance - There's a Whole World Out There
My students need one Hands Around the World rug.
FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Brand's classroom raised $871
This project is fully funded
There's a whole world out there - but living in my small, rural, conservative (and largely Caucasian) northern Michigan town, you would never know it.
Students in my school are rarely exposed to persons of different races or cultural backgrounds. In this increasingly global world, my students must be taught to understand and tolerate people of differing cultures and race.
As a third grade teacher, I teach the Core Democratic Values, which include the topics of diversity and equality. The addition of the Hands Around the World classroom rug would help my students visually connect with the multicultural appearances of the children shown on the rug. In addition, the world map in the center would enhance their understanding of the world being much larger than their small hometown. Also, the addition of a colorful carpeted area will allow my students to enjoy stories and whole group instruction in comfort.
With your financial support, you will make it possible for my lessons on diversity, equality, and tolerance to have a strong visual impact. Students will use this carpeted area many times a day, and each time they will be surrounded by a "world" of differences.
More than half of students from low‑income households
