My students need art supplies in order to continue our in-class art program. This integrated arts program is a highlight for our fifth grade students every week!
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The fifth graders at the Tobin are full of ideas and opinions, and they are not afraid to share them! We are working on building a positive community with these students. Each day they are working together and learning from one another.
Our students come from a diverse background.
Most of them are first generation and have deep ties to other countries such as Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, South America, and Haiti. Our students are proud of where their families are from.
Our school is a vibrant community. We have students in kindergarten through eighth grade. We continue to strive to prepare our students for successful academic and professional futures. We partner with a variety of outside organizations to bring quality experiences to our students that we would otherwise not be able to provide.
Our staff is dedicated to our student community and we are always looking for ways to improve the individual and collective experiences of the young people in our classrooms.
My Project
Through our partnership with ARCKBoston, a small non-profit, we are able to bring visual art classes to our fifth graders. In our weekly ARCK programs our students participate in creative exercises that combine the Arts with the Core Curriculum and National Visual Arts Standards.
ARCK uses the arts to foster open dialogue around culture, diversity, identity and social justice. Through the act of creating, our students can make personal connections to their work as well as to the themes discussed in other classes.
To continue with these programs we need general supplies such as construction paper, paints and brushes. Having paper of different sizes and weights allows our students to explore drawing scales and textures. We use these different quality papers to distinguish drafts from final projects. Paints and pastels have also become very popular mediums for our students, as they explore mixing and application techniques. Our students are growing as thinkers and artists.
ARCK provides our students with a learning experience they do not get anywhere else.
Through these classes, students share their thoughts, dreams and opinions in ways that they never have before. I see different sides of my students. Already, they have shown growth through these projects. They get excited about their art projects and love seeing the pieces in the hallway. This has been a fabulous experience for our students and we want them to be able to continue creating and learning with ARCK!
