Diversity and Belonging

Help me give my students a safe space to feel they are cared for, loved, wanted, and accepted through a diverse list of authors and things that will help them feel relaxed through the strips and bandages.

My Project

This Donors Choose project will help students experience diverse list of authors that may not be readily available to them. A lot of my students have noted racial divide in some shape or form in their communities. Wondering why there is nothing "for them" available in the school setting. This can create tension, anxiety, and/or a feeling of exclusion, which is the opposite of any effective classroom setting.

Having diverse authors in my classroom library, bandages that match their skin color, and calming strips readily available can help the hidden anxieties students of color may face in the classroom.

Being able to provide some relief in the classroom of any difference that may have been perceived as negative in the past but give the opportunity to realize they are not alone and positively unique to accept themselves and others will help foster a loving, accepting environment in the classroom. My hopes is that loving, accepting environment in the classroom can be translated into their home life, community, and world.
