Help me give my students new books about diversity, inclusion, and acceptance to introduce them to experiences of people like them and people different from them.
Second grade has changed a lot over the years. The students are expected to achieve more than ever before. How can they do this without being provided the materials to do it?
My students are in a high poverty public school that is about 70% low income.
This is something that already puts some of them at a disadvantage. They are not all able to get extra materials at home to continue learning what has been introduced at school. For this reason, I want to be able to expose them to as many learning opportunities as possible! It is in my classroom where they get to take risks and open their minds to new learning experiences! I need your help to give them all of these experiences!
My Project
More and more it is important for children to read books about people that are unlike themselves. It is important for children to learn empathy and acceptance. This is what I hope to accomplish with the books being requested in this project like: Separate is Never Equal, We All Belong, It's Okay to be Different, and Happy in Our Skin. These books will be used as read alouds for the whole class discussion, as well as put in the class library for students to read independently.
Representation matters.
And I want to have books in my classroom that represent all of my students and their families. It is important for children to see characters like them in books and it's important for children to see characters that aren't like them in books. I want to provide all of these opportunities to the children in my class.
