Diversifying the Classroom

Help me give my students access to multi-cultural books. I need to have mirror texts, where students can see themselves in stories, and window texts where students can see the world through a different perspective.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Heaphy's classroom raised $427

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As we know, not all students learn the same way. As a result, differentiated instruction is important. Many of my students struggle with reading but with a lot of hard work and sometimes after a couple of years, “they break the code” and they discover the joy of reading.

My students and I have embarked on the distance learning journey!

We are actively engaging in all sorts of different online platforms and learning new things. In addition, I am recording lessons at home for them to view and continue to learn new material. I am amazed by their level of engagement and participation, and families' willingness to try new things.

My Project

One of the most powerful ways to connect with students is through shared reading and discussing a text. As a language arts and special education teacher, I always encourage my students to become critical thinkers through reading. I would like to be able to send home each of my students with two books at the start of the year in order to encourage independent reading as well as parent involvement. I would also like to diversify my classroom library with less outdated books.

Help me give my students the chance to read books that not only apply to their culture, but also controversial topics as well.
