My Students

My school is 48% students of color with equal males and females, but the vast majority of the books we read in English class were written by old, dead white guys. I am on a mission to diversify the standard English curriculum by adding books to our inventory that represent a variety of stories and storytellers. How can all of our students feel that they are seen, heard, and that they matter if they do not see themselves in the curriculum? How can English teachers choose to revolutionize their curriculum with fresh voices if they are limited to the book choices of 30 years ago?

As the Dominican-American writer puts it, "If you want to make a human being into a monster, deny them, at the cultural level, any reflection of themselves."

Will you help me make sure my students feel like people, not monsters, by seeing themselves in the curriculum? Will you help me purchase the book Homegoing, by Yaa Gyassi?

My Project

English teachers who wish to teach novels must choose books from an antiquated canon that fails to represent many of our students. There are more than 100 book titles written by white, male authors in our book room; there are about ten titles written by a woman or a person of color that have enough copies to teach an entire class.

The time has long since passed for our school to revolutionize our curriculum, but we cannot do that without new materials.

Homegoing, by Yaa Gyasi, is an excellent book that will bring a wonderful story, a person of color, and a female storyteller into our students' lives. Please help us buy 90 copies of this book so each sophomore English teacher can teach it to their classes.
