My Students

In the photography classroom my students' creativity and their passionate curiosity come together.

Our public school, in Brooklyn, NY, was created specifically to work with students who have been held back TWICE before entering 9th grade.

These are the young people who have been the most overlooked and under-served in the city. They need a place where they can be at the center of the community, rather than feeling like the kids who were left behind. They're smart, passionate teens, who have big struggles with reading, writing, and math, and our dedicated team works hard to help them grow in these areas. In the photography and art classroom they can show their brilliance and creativity, and their successes are immediate and visible.

My Project

Our classroom photography library started when I brought in a dozen books from my own collection to share with students. Now it needs an upgrade. They need the photographic visions of a more diverse group of photographers to be represented. I want them to see more work by women photographers, photographers of color, artists from outside the US and queer artists. The books sit on a large display rack, and are always accessible to students. They serve many purposes. Students look at them for inspiration. They search them for examples of techniques we are learning. They explore them and write about them to practice analyzing images.

Viewing work by these more diverse photographers, students may see their own experiences reflected, or they may have their worlds expanded with visions of things they've never imagined.
