Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Fifth graders are not too old for read-alouds! In fact, this age is a crucial time for developing social-emotional skills, and picture books with diverse characters are an invaluable tool in this process. My students, many of whom come from diverse backgrounds, deserve stories that reflect their own lives, struggles, and triumphs. The books I’m requesting are not just for entertainment; they address real issues that many of my students face.

More than just providing representation, these books offer age-appropriate ways to cope with many different experiences.

By seeing characters work through difficulties in healthy, relatable ways, my students can build emotional resilience. The stories allow them to practice empathy, learn new coping strategies, and explore different perspectives, which are essential skills for emotional intelligence.

Through these stories, my students are not only learning how to handle challenges but also gaining pride in their culture and heritage. They get to see themselves as the heroes of their own stories, and that kind of representation is powerful. It teaches them that their voices matter and that their struggles do not define them. By investing in these books, we are giving them tools for success—not just academically, but socially and emotionally—empowering them to face the world with confidence, resilience, and pride in who they are.
