This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I’m the alternate education teacher in a low-income, inner-city school. I work with credit deficient students to get them to graduation. Many of these students feel like failures and need a lot of social and emotional education. I work hard to build confidence, self- advocacy, and goal setting. While it is important for my students to catch up, it is also important to take breaks! Activities like reading physical books and coloring are some of the things students do during brain breaks. Students have found that they feel less foggy in the head after they take these breaks and are able to focus more on not only the courses they need with me, but also in their normal classes.

I have added the Prismacolor colored pencils, markers, and other art materials because students have asked for better coloring materials beyond the Crayola classroom boxes teachers receive.

Students love the coloring sheets I provide and want more. I’ve added similar coloring books to what I have already! Students love to give their pictures to me when they are done so I can add them to the art wall I have in my room!

The short story novels included are part of a series from my own collection that I have provided to my students that they already enjoy. I am hoping to diversify the collection even more by including more cultures! Providing graphic novels of classic literature benefit the over 130 English Language learning and special Education students that I teach.

The Integrated Korean textbooks and workbooks will enrich my Korean club students’ vocabulary and grammar beyond what they have learned already. Having a Korean club in our school, I am providing, not only our IB students, but a low-income population with unique language opportunity they may not otherwise have!
