Diversified Literature

My students need new novels that are considered common core exemplars for our new state standards including nonfiction items.

My Students

My current challenge in the classroom is finding novels that today's diversified students will be interested in reading. I strongly feel that the novels selected will not only interest my students but also keep our school's standards high for what is expected from today's new standards.

My classroom population is very diverse.

I teach in a school that is considered at-risk for non-graduates and in an urban area. My students are in need of novels that will keep them reading and at the same time help meet the high expectations from our new state standards in English/Language Arts.

My Project

The novels I am requesting range from nonfiction sports stories to novels about different cultures. I normally use these types of texts for literature circles, and the students really love learning about cultures they knew nothing or very little about before. These students need this background knowledge to succeed in classes other than my own such as history and math.

These novels will benefit students for years to come because they cover such a broad range of categories, keeping their interests peeked.

My goal is to make every child in my classroom become lifelong readers. It has to start with me and my passion for making sure they have what they need for this to happen.
