Diverse Working Stations to Help Create a Productive Classroom

Help me give my students the ability to get their "wiggles" out while working in my ELA classroom. Research shows that allowing students to stand instead of sit when working helps them to focus on the content.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach English at a high school which serves a wide population and is considered to be a Title I school. This year I teach English 1 which serves primarily our freshman population with a few repeaters.

My students range from low-income to high-income families, some students have IEPs and 504s, some students are English Language Learners, and some students are enrolled in the honors program.

English is a mandatory course so I try to find ways to make the environment welcoming, engaging, and rigorous. I am hoping that the generosity of these patrons will help me accomplish my goal: to create lifelong learners who can apply the skills from my content into the world outside the classroom.

My Project

Imagine sitting at a table for 6 or more hours a day. Your ability to stay alert and at the top-of-your-game most likely starts to decline. The same goes for students in classrooms across the country. My freshman students are amazing learners but, like all of us, they fall prey to the wiggles after sitting in desks all day. These high-top tables would allow my students to opt out of sitting in a chair and stand instead. Research shows that standing helps students focus on the content they are learning, and it is beneficial to their overall health.

I currently have multiple students who have eagerly expressed the desire to stand in the back of the room to help them be more successful in the content.

With our campus being a 1-to-1 school, we use Chromebooks regularly in class. It becomes difficult for my students to stand and type their notes or annotate texts while on their computers. These tables would provide a work surface for them and allow them to remain standing. The difference in these students when they are given the option to stand versus work while seated is night and day! In the words of one of my students who deals with ADHD, "Standing is the best because I can keep my body moving slightly so that I can keep my brain focused. I just learn better when I get to stand and move."

We would be so grateful for the ability to use these tables in our everyday work. Thank you for taking the time to fund our project.
