My Students

I teach a diverse group of fourth graders at an urban school in Brooklyn. My students are silly, enthusiastic and thoughtful; they love sharing ideas and challenging one another during insightful classroom discussions.

My students are voracious readers who love recommending books to one another, avid writers who bring imagination and diverse experiences to their writing, and thoughtful investigators and problem solvers.

They work collaboratively in partners and small groups to support one another. Every day is different in our exciting, dynamic class!

My Project

In our classroom, we believe the stories we read and the voices we hear shape our perspectives on the world. We understand that students who are exposed to a variety of perspectives will develop a complex world view and learn to use a critical lens.

We know that a diverse classroom library helps build thoughtful, informed and open-minded citizens.

In this collection of books, we hear from characters who speak different languages, come from diverse backgrounds and family structures, and whose life experiences vary. Gaby Lost and Found, by Angela Cervantes, tells the story of a young girl whose mother was deported to Honduras and who desperately wants to adopt a cat for company.

The collection also offer voices from diverse Americans who tell stories about their culture and identity. Lucky Broken Girl is the story of a Cuban Jewish immigrant girl navigating her new life in New York City.
