This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Most of these books are from the recommendations from the Secondary Literacy Department. After the training during the summer teachers institute, I am convinced that our students should read more books that provide multiple viewpoints of the world and allow for wider representation. Most of the books feature protagonists or characters who are a part of underrepresented groups. During the training, I understood that I need to include diverse texts to keep my students motivated and engaged in the classroom.

At our school, we do 50 books challenge where students will read in class during the DEAR time and at home and complete a book review.

These books will give an opportunity to read something they can relate to. Students will start thinking beyond Harry Potter or the usual popular books that are available for them. Now that we are integrating ELA and Social Studies, the novels recommended have a lot of historical references that will be meaningful for them. Background knowledge from Social Studies lessons will help them comprehend what they read.

After COVID and online lessons all last year, students have struggled to keep up with reading for themselves. We need to provide them with opportunities to motivate and have them read books that can relate to. I teach in a Title I school and here school provides the students with all the possible educational experiences. For me to be able to include books in class that not only show multiple perspectives but also help me have deep discussions with students on the books they read, will be beyond education.

I truly appreciate all the support with these books and I can't wait to give my students a variety to choose from for the 50 book challenge.
