This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our high school is a Title I School with 70% of our students with socioeconomic needs. In our project-based learning environment, our students solve authentic problems troubling our community. The projects that our students will create this year will address real-world environmental concerns.

In the inner-city of Houston, in the heart of the Third Ward, our students lack access to resources that other, more affluent, students have.

At our school, we strive to bridge this gap through experiences with industry professionals in the STEM-related industries to level the playing field.

In an AP Literature class, our students need access to texts as diverse as they are. We need titles that represent them and their stories.

My Project

In today's increasing global and reflective world, it is so important to have texts that look like, that feel like, that sound like and that represent the students that we teach. Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi is such a text.

AP Literature students in a Title I School the most diverse city in the United States need to hear these voices in the literature that they read.

Our school, an engineering school located in Houston's Third Ward has students with math/science minds who also have a curiosity to see things from multiple angles. This book will help them see their own selves in these characters.

Written over 8 generations, this expansive story tells the journey of two families and their descendants in America from their own point of view. My students will compare and contrast these stories with other classic literature to hear a full telling of the story of Colonial Africa to the present.

We will use the magnificent prose and storytelling that Gyasi gives us to prepare for our AP literature exams and college.
