This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My Pre-K students love coming to school to learn and play with their friends. They think our classroom is perfect. They don't see that if we had a few extra materials, we would be able to do so many more things.
They are happy with what we have, but I want to give them more.
We are the only Pre-K class at our school, and my students are a great bunch of kids. They are just starting out, and they are so excited to come to school every day.
As their teacher, I try to maintain that excitement so that they will always love coming to school. Most of them come from very low-income homes and have never been in school before entering my class.
My Project
Now more than ever, it is important for all students to see themselves represented in the classroom. One of the best ways to do that in a Prekindergarten classroom is with books.
I want to make sure that my students see characters that look like them in the books we have in our class library.
I also want them to see stories that represent their culture and events from their lives. These representations are important for all students so that they can become accepting of others and develop empathy.
I plan to read these stories to my students this year using our distance-learning platform and I hope that seeing characters that look familiar to them will create a sense of community. I want them to feel connected even though we may not be in the physical classroom.
