My Project

The books in this grant offer diverse historical accounts that will expand my students' understanding of history with a lens of diversity, equity, inclusion and social justice. In addition, there is a selection of books especially chosen to include a special focus on Native American knowledge, wisdom and history.

These books about human rights heroes will help us build a class library for our Human Rights Heroes Project in which we study a human rights hero, write a book about this hero and then create a Living History Museum in which we dress up to "become these heroes" and recount the stories of our heroes to our peers.

The human rights heroes’ journeys featured in these books highlight important themes to inspire rich discussions about race, love, identity, gender, challenge and compassion. We will dive deeply into the history of racism and re-building our communities with anti-racism and compassion. I have included a book on the Supreme Court as well, because we will be looking at the responsibility of the justices to uphold human rights.

Overall, these books about human rights heroes past and present will help us grow and learn together and inspire thoughtful discussions among curious learners about how to reshape and deepen our understanding of the history of the United States. Students will discover many leaders throughout history who led without fear and with an eye on making the United States a more fair and equitable nation.
