This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am the Mental Health Counselor at a Title I school located in East Palo Alto, CA. One of our goals as a school is to serve the WHOLE CHILD. This means in addition to providing a comprehensive academic education, we also prioritize students' social and emotional learning and well being. I work to promote students’ self-awareness and self-regulation, as well as social awareness and social skills.
For many of our students, school is one of the only places accessible to them in terms of emotional and mental health resources and supports.
This past school year ended like no other for students around the country, mine included. However, having to close the doors on our physical school site so quickly and shift to 100% distance learning has reminded me how strong, resilient, and passionate about learning my students are. As we prepare for our students to start the next school year in these still uncertain and challenging times, Social and Emotional Learning will be more important than ever to support our students in continuing to learn, grow, and thrive.
My Project
I am asking for a variety of books focused on Social and Emotional Learning, as well as books that represent the beautiful and amazing cultures, histories, and backgrounds that make up our school. I plan to initially use these books as read alouds in virtual counseling sessions and morning meetings. Once we are able to return to our physical school site, I plan to continue to use these books to engage with all my students as they grow in their Social and Emotional Learning.
Having access to a collection of diverse books focused on Social and Emotional learning will allow me to help deepen my students learning and understanding of critical skills and help them navigate, as they discover their own identities and learn how to use their voices.
