My Students

My students are your prototypical middle school students. They love to learn (even if they won't admit to it), and they love to have fun (even when they are not supposed to). My students love to learn about the world and are consistently seeking to expand their horizons beyond the four walls of our classroom and the confines of our school. They love to learn and are constantly asking questions about the world around them.

More than 40% of the students at our school come from low-income households.

A further 11% of students are classified as English Language Learners. Nearly 44% of the school identifies as persons of color. Overall the students from our school are a very diverse crowd representative of the neighborhoods in which they come from. Our school serves over 1,500 students who are eager to learn about new and exciting perspectives.

My Project

Representation is one of the biggest factors in inspiring the dreams of our youth, be it representation in media, in education, or simply in life. Seeing that your dreams are possible because someone else has blazed the trail you wish to walk takes dreams and makes them an achievable reality. These books help students who are traditionally left out of the narrative of life based on the color of their skin. Their heroes too often look like someone else, not the face they see in the mirror. Their problems often are not the problems they read about in the classroom or see on the news.

We face a crisis of representation in our country today.

Historian Carlos Cortes wrote, "When the only portrayals audiences see of minority characters are negative—in this case, he was talking about Latino gangs in East LA that were featured prominently by news media—those portrayals transcend to public image." Our classrooms and our communities are wonderfully diverse, but too often the materials we provide them are monochromatic. Please help me make a difference in the lives of my students by providing them access to high quality materials which will inspire them to achieve greatness.

The second part of this project is a classroom supply of VR headsets to help inspire my students to explore the world by taking them to places we cannot physically go. We will be able to wander Machu Pichu, soar above the Great Wall, and witness the history of the world from the walls of our classroom. My hope is to provide the tools for my students to learn about the world beyond our reach and to inspire future world citizens.
