My Students
This year I teach an amazing bunch of 4th and 5th students in a combo (combination) class. Our school is located in Northeastern Los Angeles county, and my students come to me from a variety of backgrounds. Approximately 32% of the students at our school qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, and everyone receives free breakfast. We are a small school with big dreams.
My students are voracious readers, and this year we have taken on the challenge of reading 180 picture books for the year.
We are doing well with our goal, but I am always in search of books and often pay for them out of my own pocket.
My students love listening to books and reading, and we need books and book sets to engage and encourage exploration as well as comprehension.
My Project
The titles I have requested will give my students an opportunity to help them grow as thinkers and citizens of the world. My students are growing up in a time where it's more important than ever to know about and engage in the world around them.
The titles I've requested for our class include stories of living with disabilities, homelessness, Native American relocation, immigration, survival, and perseverance.
Giving my students access to these diverse titles will help give them perspective and help them relate to others who may be different from them but still afford them the opportunity to learn from their stories. I've also requested two resources that will help me in my work as a teacher to support them in their reading and writing.
