My Students

Middle school can be tough. Everyone remembers the social awkwardness and growing academic expectations during these few years.

My students, in addition to the growing pains of middle school, are also navigating a new language and culture.

My students are English Language Learners from around the world, with seven different languages and over twelve different countries represented in our classes. They face their challenges with enthusiasm, curiosity and hard-work. They are eager to learn and share their stories. As a class, we focus on projects that promote critical thinking and student voice, doing projects from classroom recipes, visiting local farms and creating our own bilingual poetry.

My Project

Picture books might seem like they're only for elementary school, but we use them all the time in class: to introduce a learning topic, practice reading fluency, learn new vocabulary, and just for fun! Our class looks forward to read-alouds every week and they are especially helpful to our newcomers who are just starting to learn how to read.

With over 12 different countries represented in my classes, it is especially important to find books that represent my students.

They are always excited to see books that reflect their experiences. These books will help my students learn English and feel connected and included in our classroom.
