My students are four year olds entering school for the first time. They are curious, creative, and enthusiastic about learning even given the challenges that this school year has given us all.
They love to learn about the world around them through exploration and hands-on learning which can be difficult in a remote or hybrid learning situation.
Everything is new and exciting for them as they are becoming more and more independent and finding themselves. They love to play outside, work in centers, and sing! My students are learning about themselves, their classmates, and what it means to be a part of a community.
My Project
A large part of our day in kindergarten is spent in center time. This is the time when students are able to build their neighborhoods with legos or blocks and work through home situations in the doll house and drama areas. These center activities are more important than ever, when students have been through these unprecedented losses and times.
Since students of color have been losing loved ones at much higher rates than white students and because four year olds often have difficulty expressing themselves in words, it is important that they have access to dolls and toys that represent them.
These materials help students to work through their emotions in a developmentally appropriate way and allow us, as teachers, to observe this work and help them move through these strong feelings.
