My Students
I teach an energetic crew of 18 second grade students in Dorchester, MA. They are talkative and inquisitive, eager to learn new things that will connect to their lives and validate their experiences. In a Project-Based Learning environment, our crew works together to learn through reading, writing, experimentation, and fieldwork experiences.
When learning is engaging, purposeful, and relevant to students' lives, they are able to not only take in new information but remember it and find a use for it.
All students deserve an education that will prepare them to enter the world and help them to become better people. As they work together, they gain the important questioning skills that will help them to become lifelong learners.
My Project
With this project, my students will have a wider variety of books and stories to choose from. They will be able to see characters that look like them, talk like them, and have lives like them as well as characters that are different from them.
All children love to read - they just have to find the right story.
When we provide students with a variety of genres, characters, lengths, and complexities of text, they will be able to both investigate what they like to read but also learn how to tell a story. As they read and see books with all kinds of characters, they also internalize the idea that every story deserves to be read - including their own.
