My Students

My 5th grade students are very diverse. We come from a variety of social, economic, religious, and racial backgrounds. We speak several different languages, and we perform on a variety of different academic ability levels. We all come to school each day with different gifts and talents, interests and issues, hopes and dreams.

Despite all the ways we are different, we are alike in so many ways.

We are all leaders in our school. We are all excited about learning. We LOVE to share what we know. We are curious, ask questions, and celebrate when we are successful at learning new things. Most importantly, we work hard by using everyone's unique talents to support all of our varying needs in order to succeed. We know our teamwork is what will make our dreams work!

My Project

For this project, I am requesting books we can use during our reading block to enhance and support learning across the curriculum - specifically in the areas of science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM). For example, Drum Dream Girl: How One Girl's Courage Changed Music correlates to our study of sound in science, and Hello Ruby: Adventures in Coding ties into a variety of our computer activities like Hour of Code.

These titles reflect the growing diversity we encounter as global citizens, model problem solving from beyond our community, and redefine the image of leadership.

From Mae Jemison and Ada Lovelace to Emmanuel Ofosu Yeboah and Horace Pippin, the strong main characters in these books depict women, minorities, and people with disabilities being successful, overcoming adversity, leading in their chosen fields, and reaching their dreams. The people represented in these stories are role models I want all my students to learn about and to admire. I believe adding these titles to our class library will impact the developing perceptions my students have about STEAM careers and who can be successful leaders in those jobs in the future.
