Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
On Friday, March 13 I told my students to have a great weekend, and I would see them Monday. There was a closet full of jackets and unfinished projects left on tables to begin Monday. The very next day, the governor came on TV announced our schools would be closed down due to COVID-19. While I knew a closure was imminent, I did not expect it to happen so suddenly and had no idea it would last through the remainder of the school year.
Right now, my scholars are working hard online.
They login each day, watch my video and lessons, participate in activities, send messages, and complete assignments. As an adult, I know it is hard to work from home, I can't imagine how an 8-year-old must feel, but I have not heard any complaints. They are persevering through and tell me each day that they miss real school. During these tough times, you can look to kids to see greatness in this world...it is reassuring that we will all be okay.
Next year is uncertain, no one knows what it will look like. Right now I am trying to gather everything I need for all possibilities.
My Project
Growth in literacy and in life comes from reading a lot. Students need to engage in a variety of texts each and every day including books on their own instructional reading level.
“Books are sometimes windows, offering views of worlds that may be real or imagined, familiar or strange.
These windows are also sliding glass doors, and readers have only to walk through in imagination to become part of whatever world has been created or recreated by the author." (Rudine Sims Bishop) It is important for students to see themselves in the books that they read.
Many guided reading books are boring. They feature animals as characters or characters that all look the same. It is important that diversity in text extends to books that students read on their instructional reading level. For these reasons, I am requesting a variety of diverse texts that reflect the students that I teach.
It is important for students to be guided in their reading and if we are still working online, I will deliver the books to my students' houses and use video conferencing to hold small group guided reading discussion. These books will spark rich discussion and will have a lasting impact in my classroom no matter what the mode of learning is. Thank you for your consideration!
