Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
It is so important for children of color to see themselves represented in toys, games, and media. When children don’t see themselves represented, they don’t feel as valued. My classroom is full of students who are various shades of black and brown, yet the toy dolls in our classroom do not reflect our classroom population. When my students are acting out rolls in the dramatic play area they will argue over who has the brown doll because we only have one. My students start to ask teachers and peers in the classroom why do we only have one "brown or black" doll?
Hispanic and African American children will be more interested and engaged in play when they see themselves reflected in the toys and materials in the classroom.
Please help me provide my students with Hispanic and African American dolls so that my students feel seen, valued and engaged in meaningful dramatic play.
