The students in kindergarten at our school are as inquisitive as they are unique. Coming from a multitude of diverse backgrounds and individualized needs, my students are excited explorers and avid learners.
In kindergarten, we know that everyone has a different set of strengths, experiences, and needs that they bring to the table, both academically and personally.
We strive together to make growing, learning, and developing a tremendous experience for ourselves and for our peers. In order to ensure that each student thrives, we incorporate a variety of learning strategies, problem solving techniques, and diverse materials.
My Project
In a 2018 analysis, the Cooperative Children's Book Center found that 50% of the characters in picture books published that year where white. Our students will find representation of white people to be expansive and varied and while books about and by people of color are on the rise, there is still a great lack of diverse texts inside of the classroom, especially in the curriculum.
With these books, the entire Kindergarten team will have diverse alternative books for our comprehension curriculum.
These books were recommended by the creators of the curriculum to give kindergarten students from all backgrounds a chance to see their peers and themselves in the books we read together.
Every dollar goes towards giving all 5 kindergarten classrooms at our school a copy of the diverse books. Please share the link and donate.
