Diverse Classroom Library

Help me give my students a classroom library full of diverse and inclusive picture books!

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Miller's classroom raised $630

This project is fully funded

My Students

I am a first and second-grade teacher in New Jersey’s second-largest, urban school district. More than half of the students in my school get free or reduced lunch. My school embraces a school motto that emphasizes "Respect, Accepting Others, Caring, and Excelling" in all areas. I "loop" with the same group of children and teach them for two years. My classroom is "home" to a racially, culturally, and ethnically diverse group of amazing youngsters. I am proud to be their teacher and treat this as a privilege.

My Project

This project will help create a truly diverse and inclusive picture book library for my students. It includes many books that highlight self-expression, being true to oneself and celebrating differences in positive, uplifting and inspiring stories in addition to teaching all children about the past in terms they can understand in second grade. We will also be able to celebrate and highlight different cultural traditions and celebrations.

I want my students to be able to relate to the diverse characters in books where their uniqueness is put into the spotlight, celebrated and presented in an uplifting manner.

This will foster confidence and inspire my students. I want my students to read stories about people of color in which they can be imagine being like and relate to in a variety of stories that are age-appropriate.
