Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My classroom is filled with reluctant readers who have not been introduced to the right characters or the story that grabs them and pulls them in. I work with them to find their interests and show them how they can use these interests to find books that they'll enjoy. Once they find one, they're in!
My students start the year out reading below grade level.
They admit to not reading and often say they do not like to read in the beginning of the school year. It is my goal to have each of them end the school year as readers, not because someone told them they had to, but because they enjoy it. Our school is a Title I school with more than 90% of our students classified as economically disadvantaged.
Many of my students come to me with a sense of apathy formed from the lack of experiences of academic success in the past. We work all year to learn to grow from failure and use them to get a step closer to success. A big part of this process is growing as readers.
My Project
My students will use these books to read during independent reading time. This is a time in class where students are given the opportunity to read their own books that they have selected based on their interests. The students will choose from the books in our classroom library or bring books they get from the school library. The books that they choose are based strictly on their interests and are their own choice.
The books will be used to help peak student interest in reading books with characters they can relate to and topics that interest them. The shelves and storage bins will be used to display the books in an inviting way so that students can browse the titles and get to them with ease. The storage bench will be used for students to sit on while reading.
My students need to see the joy in reading if they are to become lifelong readers.
The best way for them to grow as readers is to actually engage in reading for pleasure. It will serve as the bridge that lets them in to a world of improved literacy. The more they read, the better they become as readers and writers. This is the kind of growth my students need to close the gap and gain access to future opportunities for success.
