My Students
Help me show my students that they love to read! My class will do book clubs and book reviews this semester to give students a chance to explore books that are relevant and interesting to them. This collection is catered to the diverse needs, abilities, and interests of my class.
My students are 9th, 10th, and 11th graders at a high school in Brooklyn.
They are students with many diverse needs and abilities. I teach special education reading studio as well as a class that focuses on the relationship between art and literature.
The kids read at levels from third grade to ninth grade, and their challenges vary from learning disabilities to emotional and physical disabilities. They are from widely varying backgrounds, and their interests are just as diverse. I see the energy and excitement they feel when discussing anime or basketball, and the pressure and sadness they feel when discussing gangs and neighborhood violence. I think that this passion is an opportunity to create avid readers. By letting them explore what they already have questions about, I hope to show them that the true reward of reading is learning about yourself and the world around you.
My Project
By bringing a bookshelf and a collection of over forty books into my classroom, I hope to engage kids in reading as a habit.
I have created this list of books based on what I know of my students and their lives. They are motivated to learn when they can see themselves in the instruction, and this collection contains stories they will be able recognize as their own. It also contains stories of lives they will strive to make their own.
From classics like A Wrinkle in Time to If I Grow Up, to stories of women in history, to the graphic novel Flight, my students will be able to find their niche on this shelf.
This is a mixture of short stories, novels, biographies, graphic novels, poetry, and non-fiction that will engage, inspire, and challenge my students.
Finally, these books will be valuable resources for years to come as the beginning of what I hope will be an ongoing and growing library for my classroom.
