Diverse Children's Literature with Friends!

Help me give my students children's literature that reflects their cultures and those they have yet to experience. Also, we will use the puppets to understand our standards, create movement, and connect music with emotions.

My Students

Our energetic and eager elementary musicians are members of a North Carolina Virtual School. The students recognize the school as a safe and welcoming place to spend their days. All students are valued in the music class. Our musicians take on challenges, explore, and build a foundation to be lifelong musicians and supporters of the arts. In our music classes, they find their voice and gain confidence.

The music room is where we sing, say, dance, play, and create in a tuneful, beautiful, and artful way.

My Project

We have students from all around Alamance County; our students are diverse and unique and from many different races and cultures. When our school opened in fall 2021, we did not have children's literature available, much less any other resources.

There are two goals for this project provide diverse children's literature that serves as a mirror, window, and sliding glass door and puppets that can be special guests and bring whimsey and variety to learning.

We currently use puppets in many ways, including learning our standards using different voices that pair with the creatures and pairing them with children's literature. Movement is also a significant portion of our classes, and the puppets serve as concrete examples of ways to move as the students learn how to express themselves through creative and improvisatory movement.
