Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students in my classroom come from differing backgrounds, but all of them bring a unique personality to our community of learners. My students come from low-income/high poverty homes, and with that comes different challenges. As their teacher, it is my duty to provide the safest and warmest environment for them to have their best opportunity for learning. My students need me to be more than just their teacher. Sometimes I'm a nurse, counselor, friend, mom, or superhero, and with that, I strive to help my students in any way possible.

My Project

Over the last couple of years I have realized how important it is to make sure my classroom library showcases a diverse set of characters in the books my students read. All of the Donor's Choose projects I have done related to my classroom library I have tried to make sure I include books with diverse characters. I include ones that look like my students so they can see themselves in the books. As well as characters that look different from my students so they can learn about other cultures and ethnicities.

Right now with the Black Lives Matter movement there has been a surge of new to me books with Black characters that I want included in my classroom library.

I also know I need to include more Hispanic, Muslim, Asian, and other ethnicities in my library to make it fully diverse. That is what I hope to accomplish with this project. I've also included a several biographies of important leaders.
