Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach 20 third grade students in a Title I school, meaning 100% of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch. Despite my students being below their grade level in reading and math, they are always excited to come to school and take on the challenges that come with each new topic or subject.
I want to create a classroom environment that is nurturing, engaging, and a place where they can thrive!
I would like to provide this environment by making sure my students have all the materials and supplies that will help them grow as learners and foster their love of learning.
My Project
This year, my goal is to continue increasing diverse representation within my classroom library through books that showcase diverse characters and stories. We need more books that represent and honor my students' diversity. I have been working on this for the last couple of years, and my next area of improvement is chapter books. Representation within chapter books is something my current classroom library is lacking.
Being a part of a diverse group of students creates endless opportunities for them to recognize that all people are unique and important in their own way.
Our world is beautifully diverse and the books that are in a classroom must mirror the lives of the readers! These books will help engage and excite my students to continue reading and learning while providing stories that reflect their own experiences as well as the experiences of others. By getting diverse chapter books into the hands of growing readers, I will be able to create opportunities for rich discussions and lessons of empathy, compassion, and kindness.
