Diverse Books to Teach Culture and Acceptance

Help me give my students books that portray different cultures and ethnicities, and some tasty multicultural snacks for them to try.

My Students

Our district is one of the most diverse in the nation. Our students come from a variety of cultural and religious backgrounds, speak multiple languages, and perform on a wide range of academic abilities. It is amazing to educate children who are so different from one another. They have some of the most fun and vibrant personalities, and I am excited every day I am able to work with them. I have never met more hardworking students!

With all of the demands we put on our young students, they deserve a chance to learn through hands-on activities, in a fun and engaging environment.

We try our best as a school and community to present our students with creative ways to express their knowledge. I am so excited to bring new opportunities to my students. I can't wait to inspire them to become more motivated learners and kinder citizens.

My Project

My students come from one of the most diverse districts in the nation. We have a variety of ethnicities, cultures, and languages spoken in our classroom. Our students need to see themselves represented through the characters in the stories they read. I also want to be able to explicitly teach them about other cultures, including their own, and let them try different snacks and food from places around the world.

Being in Alaska, it can feel like we are quite removed from the rest of the world, but we can bring the cultures into our classroom through small group leveled reading, whole group read alouds, and easy to serve snacks.

I would love to have 5 copies of a few titles that have African American main characters for our small reading groups. I want to be able to integrate these titles into our classroom throughout the school year, and not just during the month of February. I would also like a copy of books with different cultures and ethnicities represented for read alouds and to go along with some snacks for the students to try. My students would benefit from seeing strong characters who look like them because every child deserves to see themselves as a leading role.
