Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I work with students from a community in need. These students are all part of the free lunch program because of their economic status and the majority of them are learning English along with just learning how to be in school. In general, their families support their education in any way possible but language barriers can make this difficult. My families have a hardworking spirit and look to the teacher to provide a better future for their children.
My students need access to quality diverse reading materials.
These children need to be able to see themselves in the books they read. These reading materials will open my students to experience they will most likely not have any other way. I have learned that students connect well with literature in which they are represented. They get excited to see the pictures read about kids just like them. Access to this type of reading material opens my students' minds and imaginations in a new and exciting way.
My Project
I am excited to see these books in the hands of my students. When they see diverse characters and books demonstrating strong choices, they will be able to relate on a deeper level. Many of these books will be used to help us build strong character traits so they can set the example on our campus. Many of these books will be used to supplement our Social Studies so we can learn through fiction about people who are different than we are.
Diverse books in the hands of my students will allow for them to see themselves in the stories.
This can help create strong lifelong readers and learners. My goal in my classroom is to lay strong foundations for more than just learning. I want to lay a strong foundation to be a strong contributing member of the community.
