Diverse Books to Give Kids Mirrors and Windows

Help me give my students diverse children's books like "Fry Bread", "Jabari Jumps", and "Pink is for Boys". They need books about people of color, gender diversity, and other kinds of diversity as well.

My Students

My school is a multi-age public charter school with groups configured into TK/Kindergarten/First, Second/Third, and Fourth/Fifth grade classes, for a total of 8 classes serving 195 students.

We have the most culturally and ethnically diverse community of any school in our area, including a wide range of socio-economic levels.

Our students are active and like to play outside. They love to engage in Music and Art classes, as well as Spanish and P.E. They love to spend time with their Buddy Families, combining younger and older kids across the school. Our kids really love to share stories - stories about adventures and challenges, adversity and triumph.

My Project

I am creating a collection of books to be shared by our 8 classroom teachers, for all of us to read with our students. The stories will be available to all 195 of our children, ages 4 to 11.

These books will encourage conversations about equity, diversity, and inclusion.

In elementary school, this is what social justice looks like: “mirrors and windows”. Mirrors for kids to see themselves represented in stories, and windows to see into the stories of others who are different from them. Feeling the feelings of others, and knowing that we are all more alike than we are different.
