My students need books that reflect their interests and heritages, while also allowing them to explore the diverse world they live in, and do so both in individual and buddy reading.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"I Loved this book! Do you have any others like it?"
I love hearing these words from my students.
Most of them come from working class families and while some of them do have books at home, many of them don't. Our school library does a good job of having a wide range of books for all 700+ students enrolled in our school, but many of the students want to read the same book that their friend or buddy is reading. That's where classroom libraries come in handy.
I want my students to have be able to learn in a print rich environment where they can find books that meet all of their interests. I also want students to be able to read books with diverse subjects and characters, so they can learn tolerance for those from different backgrounds, a necessary skill.
My Project
Every book has a reader, but not every reader in my classroom currently has a book. With this project I hope to correct that quote and make sure that every reader in my classroom has a book that will reach them. So many students, especially struggling readers, get turned away from reading at an early age because they think it's too hard. In many cases though, it's simply a situation where that child hasn't found anything that really sparks their interest. This collection of requested books is sure to spark interest for my students. I am asking for copies of fifty-eight different books including Ghosts, Heroes for My Daughter and El Deafo plus a boxed set of Dinosaurs Graphic Novels.
These books will bring the diverse world around them to my readers, employing strong diverse subjects and characters, strong female characters who have broken down barriers, and also graphic materials to help reluctant readers on their way.
The biographies included in my project are about people who made a difference in the world. My students need to see people that look like them making a difference. Not every student wants to read a biography so I have also included a sampling of acclaimed and high-interest graphic novels as well. Every book in my cart is sure to inspire someone in my classroom in some way. By the end of the year I want every student to have found their gateway book and leave the year wanting to read more.
