My Students

Stockbridge is a small, rural town in Michigan. Stockbridge students come from mostly working class backgrounds, and many families have lived in Stockbridge for generations.

My students are 10th and 12th graders, many of whom have the dream to be the first in their family to attend college.

They are curious and smart and need access to resources to help their dreams become reality. One of the best things my students can do to help them prepare for the demands of college and the world beyond our small town is to become committed, voracious readers.

My Project

Recent studies show that reading for pleasure is one of the most important factors in students' academic success.

The effect of regular pleasure reading was four times greater than the advantage students gained from having a parent with an advanced degree.

Children who choose what they read tend to read more, to be more motivated, show stronger literacy and language skills and they tend to score better in math.

In order to promote a culture of reading, I need new books for my classroom library. Having books in the classroom is proven to increase student reading. In fact, one study showed that students with a classroom library read 60% more than a control group.
