Diverse Books for Our Classroom Library

Help me give my students a library of children's books that reflects the diversity within our classroom and community.

My Project

My first-grade class is made up of a group of amazing students that come from diverse backgrounds. This project will provide literature with diverse characters and important subject matter for our classroom library. I feel it is important to bring books into the classroom that not only have diverse characters but are written by authors of various cultures and backgrounds. Donalyn Miller said, "I try to teach my students that books are a mirror, reflecting their own lives, and a window, giving them a peek into someone else's."

Students should be able to see themselves reflected in the books around them.

In my classroom, we are a family. It is important to create a community where all students feel welcomed, comfortable, and safe. My goal is to create a classroom community that centers on empathy, equity, and inclusion. I want my students to know they are important, valued, and perfect just the way they are. I feel the supplies from this project will help build and strengthen our classroom community.
