My Students
My students are a diverse group of thinkers and learners who come together in the spirit of learning. We are a public, urban Montessori middle school, and, as a school that opened five years ago, we are still emerging and growing as a community. We are located in a historically diverse and low-income community. Seventy-seven percent of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch.
My students love reading!
They come to middle school with an enthusiasm for their educations and form a strong community. Our Montessori classroom experience is focused on educating the whole child and creating lifelong learners.
My Project
Reading can open our eyes to worlds and perspectives outside of our own experience. Books can also act as mirrors, helping us to better understand our own lives. As a reading teacher, I am always striving to diversify our classroom library so that students can expand their understanding of themselves and their world. I am asking for twenty-two books including Listen, Slowly; All the Broken Pieces; and The Way You Make Me Feel.
Our classroom library needs these books with Asian and Asian-American characters so that my students can see reflections of themselves in literature.
In addition to these characters, the majority of the twenty-two books in this project are written by Asian-American authors, providing many of my students the invaluable opportunity to find role models that look like them and have life experiences similar to their own.
