Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My class serves students with a range of disabilities, including intellectual and learning disabilities, speech impairment, emotional disturbance, and autism spectrum disorder. They struggle processing information and teaching them using different modalities is extremely important to make sure I reach all of my students.
My students are first and second graders with emotional, social and academic delays.
Most of my students are performing one to two grades below grade level, but are still expected to reach grade level common core standards as all other general education students. They are students that love learning but realize they are facing a challenge. Most of my students benefit from tactile and visual learning.
My Project
Providing diverse books will give students the opportunity to connect in a meaningful way to a global community. Diverse literature can also be a powerful tool which will allow my students to gain a better understanding of both their own culture and the cultures of others.
Having these books will allow my students to see themselves within the pages.
Providing more diverse books in my classroom library will give my students positive self-esteem and prevents them from feeling isolated. These books will have the ability to nurture respect, empathy, and acceptance among all the students in my class. We will be able to use the books for both independent reading and read aloud.
