My students need diverse books that relate to their multi-cultural backgrounds.

My Students
As a teacher of military children, my students are faced with many challenges that civilian students do not typically face. Many of them have already moved 2 or 3 times by the time they are in first grade. Despite these challenges, my students adapt to new situations and ideas easily and are eager to expand their knowledge.
My students are resilient, adaptable, and compassionate.
I admire my students' strength. Their parent(s) joined the military, but they did not. Yet they deal with deployments, frequent moves and school transitions with an attitude that is admirable. They come to school every day eager to learn more.
My Project
Working on a military base, my students come from all backgrounds and walks of life. I would like books that they can personally relate to. Currently we do not have any books that feature characters of Middle Eastern or Asian descent and very little books with characters of African and Hispanic descents.
Diverse books empower, normalize and make cultures visible to young readers.
Every child deserves to see themselves in books. The world is a diverse place and I would like my classroom library to reflect that. Please donate to my project and help show my students it is okay for them to be who they are.
