This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Think about coming into a kindergarten classroom with students who have varied ethnic backgrounds and whose primary language is not English. These students often need extra support for learning a new language - English! These kindergartners always manage to come to school with the biggest smiles on their faces no matter what. Every day, I teach my students the English language, as well as the Next Generation Science Standards.
Many of these students do not have English language support at home.
I immerse them in the English language and help them become successful. My school prides itself on being able to bring students together for creative endeavors. With help from donors, we've already been able to fund multiple successful and engaging projects.
My Project
If this year has taught us anything, it is that we need teach our children more about the power of kindness and diversity. Please help give my class of diverse learners new books for our classroom library. I have been thinking a great deal about the books I currently have in my classroom and realized that many of them don't represent the children's diversity.
Students need to see themselves in the books we read and how to love people no matter what.
I want to give my students books that include racial differences, developmental differences, family differences, and gender differences. Titles like I Am Enough, Love Makes a Family, Pink is for Boys and Everybody Cooks Rice are all books that will help represent the diversity of my students.
