My students need 17 books, both nonfiction and fiction, that focus on the culture and community of African Americans.

My Students
Have you ever been stuck reading books without a single character who shares your skin color? My students often do. Almost half of my students are African American, but the majority of books offered to them focus on white main characters. They need books they can relate to and connect with.
Over 80% of my students receive a free or reduced price lunch.
That means 80% of my students come from struggling families in a low income area. Because of that, my students don't have all the resources available to others, and that includes books with characters they can relate to. My students want to read, but the books just aren't available.
My Project
My students will read so much more if they have books that interest them and books they can connect with. I try to teach my students that reading is fun and a great hobby outside of school. However, without the books my students crave, they fail to see that.
These books will help me convince my students to read for pleasure.
My students will finally be able to connect with books in a way they often don't. Help me create life long readers.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
