Our students at our Title I Middle School in North Carolina have undergone a disruption to their learning due to the pandemic. My Social Studies class is filled with 12-13-year-old students. They are a diverse group of students from many different cultures, socioeconomic backgrounds, and learning levels. My students are compassionate, energetic, and inquisitive.
My Project
When my project is fully funded, my classroom library will be more inclusive. This project contains books written for, by, or about people of the African Diaspora. The books that will be available for student selection to read in class or at home on a variety of reading levels.
My goal is to help my students fall in love with reading for fun by providing them with books that are of high interest.
Middle School Students want to read about teenagers who have similar experiences to their own, from authors who celebrate their diversity and cultural pride. I want to continue to grow my classroom library, so it adequately represents the wants and needs of my students.
