Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My third graders attend an inner-city Title I school, this year they have been learning 100% virtually. At our school, all of the students receive free breakfast and lunch so they can focus on learning while they are in class. Half of my students are English Language Learners which means that on top of learning the content for third grade they are also working hard to master English. Despite the challenges of virtual school, my students show me everyday how much they care about each other and how much they want to learn!
My Project
My classroom library was growing more diverse and I had books that my students treasured because they could relate to the characters. Since going virtual my students have struggled with getting their hands on real books at their level because schools and libraries are closed. Of the few book they have at home, most are too easy for them now since they have been working hard this year. Many of my students are ready to start reading chapter books, but more importantly I want them to see themselves in the new books they read. Books with diverse characters will give my students opportunities to not only grow as readers, but also to learn from the choices that characters they can relate to make.
My students need books that they can keep and read forever with characters that look like them and their peers.
These book will allow my students to engage with characters with similar backgrounds and explore other cultures. I am requesting multiple copies of the same books so that my students can talk with their peers and make connections during our literacy stations. Your donation will allow my students to curl up with a good book before bed then share their thoughts with their friends online the next day.
