Diverse Books and Materials for Language and Literacy Intervention

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
The intention behind this project is to help my students see themselves represented in diverse children’s books that show children or characters with a wide range of racial identities, cultural backgrounds, gender identities, disabilities, linguistic experiences, and family types. Students demonstrate significantly increased reading success and comprehension of material when it is relevant and engaging!
Students with language disabilities also often demonstrate weaknesses in narrative language skills, reading, and writing.
Providing these materials will support my goal of providing them with culturally sensitive opportunities to engage with books and encourage a love of books by seeing and hearing about characters and stories that reflect their lived experience.
I wish to furnish my speech therapy room with a collection of diverse picture books and companion materials (laminated TPT materials) to allow students to not only listen to stories but to engage in interactive activities to increase comprehension, expression, and narrative language skills.
I also plan to utilize drawing and writing to help students interact with the reading material which is why whiteboards, dry erase markers, Velcro dots, binders, rings, and crayons would also be helpful.
