My Students

I teach at an urban elementary school in a low-income/high poverty school district. It is an exceptionally diverse student body- racially, culturally, and socio-economically. Many of our students speak languages other than English. The students at our school come to school with diverse backgrounds, cultures, languages, and families.

Our students love to LEARN!

Our school community embraces this diversity and honors all children. Despite a variety of challenges our students may face, one common thread among them is their complete excitement for learning and engaging in school activities. We try to meet the needs of all of our students in person and through distance learning.

My Project

Our community is committed to co-creating healing spaces for literacy teaching and learning; a space where curiosity and joy are fostered in authentic partnerships to provide equitable access and cognitive demand for our multilingual, multicultural and racially diverse scholars.

Help our students get ownvoices books to help see themselves in books and others.

Diverse representations in children’s literature are important not only because children are empowered by seeing themselves in books, but also because children’s world views are expanded by seeing people who are different from themselves. Inclusive children’s literature means that not only are children seeing themselves in the books that they read, but also helps shape their worldview to build tolerance and empathy for those unlike themselves.
