Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our Title I school is located in an urban neighborhood made up mostly of apartments, outside of downtown Los Angeles. The school serves kindergartners through eighth graders.
My students are bright, energetic, and inquisitive learners.
Reading, art, and physical education are some of their favorite subjects. They are all of Hispanic descent and many speak Spanish at home with their families.
I try to give the students opportunities and experiences so they can see possibilities for their futures.
My Project
Our library was closed for over a year due to the pandemic. My students were unable to check out books to read at home during this time. The library is now open and my students need diverse and inclusive books to read.
Therefore, I am asking for classic books such as "Island of the Blue Dolphins" by Scott O'Dell and award winning books such as "Last Stop on Market Street" by Matt de la Pena (in English and Spanish).
These books all celebrate diversity and show a broad spectrum of characters.
